The Menu: Beach Snacks Part 1

This weekend, Scott and I were listening to an episode of the BBC Food Programme about food people eat when they go camping. Not one for camping myself, I cannot relate to the idea that being outdoors without plumbing makes certain foods taste better, but I do love eating on the beach, mostly because I just love being on the beach.

And eating.

So? What are the best noms for a day at the beach?

32 fl oz of pure joy.

ICED COFFEE

You know I fucking love Wawa. And I fucking love iced coffee. My motto happens to be "every season is iced coffee season." So if I'm going to hit up a Wawa before a beach day, that mocha mint magic is happening. Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee is a serviceable substitute.

HOAGIES PLZ

And as long as we're hitting up Wawa, I am not above eating a Sizzli for breakfast and a hoagie for lunch. Yes, I call them subs, not hoagies, but Wawa boasts Hoagiefest damn near every time I'm at the beach, and I bow down to Wawa. I don't even mind when I bite down and get a little crunch of sand with my turkey. Aaaand I may need some snacks for in between mealtimes. I'm preferable to Wawa soft pretzels and whatever gummies are available (all the gummies).

Fiona has impeccable taste.

LIGHT & FRUITY (BASIC BITCH) BEVERAGES

I know beer is often the drink of choice for a day at the beach, but I tend to prefer something light and fruity. If I don't want to spend the afternoon passed out and dehydrated, I'll opt to stick with my daily addiction, Lacroix (cherise limón Cúrate, s'il vous plaît), or if I'm desiring something harder, the options abound. On my last trip, I was introduced to hard seltzer (raspberry was delightful), and I'm not above a nostalgic Seagram's Escape.

GIMME.

DESSERT (OR PRE-SSERT, AS SCOTT CALLS IT)

OK, really there is nothing better than ice cream or Italian ice on the beach. On Dewey Beach, they come around with flavored ice. Out on the Rehoboth Bay, where Jen and I spent a day on a boat with MICA Camp last year, there was a boat serving Italian ice and hot dogs! Amazing!

What are your favorite beach treats? Stay tuned for Part 2 -- food you can only get at the beach (but you probably eat OFF the beach).
