The Menu: Mezcal Tasting In Mexico

During our minimoon in Mexico, Mike and I really wanted to wrap our heads around the latest mezcal craze, so what better way than to have a private mezcal tasting? Luckily, our hotel was there to help us with this.

The Fairmont Mayakoba hoooked us up with a super knowledgeable bartender and let us do the tasting at one of the hotel bars, La Laguna. Our host Israel was amazing. He taught us local toasts (involving making the sign of the cross, l’chaim!), why a shot glass would have a cross at the bottom (formerly mezcal was consumed in an empty candle from a church…but after drinking, you might also just see God), and how fancy mezcal is made (it includes marinating it in a chicken stomach for years!). We even got to drink a fancy-ass mezcalita out of a pepper.

I’m not even lying when I saw that I’ve only had mezcal to drink since I’ve been back to the states. It’s a thing.
