Best Of: Podcasts to Make You Hungry

If you happen to be browsing podcasts by category in Apple podcasts, you'll notice two glaring category omissions -- travel and food.

HUGE OVERSIGHT, APPLE!

Srsly WTF.

Since you can get all your travel content needs met here at HTJL, I've got you covered for the best foodie podcasts to add to your queue.

THE SPORKFUL

I guess Jen and I have probably talked about "The Sporkful" ad nauseum at this point now, but this weekly podcast is really good! "It's not for foodies, it's for eaters." What more could you want in a podcast? It's unique among the food podcasts I listen to because it's the only one that really takes a look at food through lifestyle and culture -- and not in a way that feels heavy or contrived. Plus, gotta love host Dan Pashman's passion for all things food.

GASTROPOD

Like "The Sporkful" (and probably most of the podcasts on today's list), I've written about "Gastropod" before, which takes a historical and scientific approach to food. Obviously I loved their look at seltzer since I am a big LaCroix whore, and I learned a ton from "Hacking Taste." But honestly, those are just two of my favs -- they are all great!

EATER UPSELL

I've always loved Eater, and I love the "Eater Upsell."`Hosts Helen Rosner and Greg Morabito interview chefs, cookbook writers, food photographers, restaurant critics, and more. While I hated working in the restaurant industry with every fiber of my being, I am pretty obsessed with chef lives and of course eating at great restaurants, so this is a must-listen.

FOODSTUFF

OK, real talk -- this newish one from HowStuffWorks is decent, and I enjoy it, but the premise is more or less the same as that of "Gastropod." Considering some of their first episodes are on the same topics already covered in "Gastropod," I have to wonder... And since it's relatively new, I don't think the hosts have quite the same ease and charm that Gastro's Nicola Twilley and Cynthia Graber have. BUT, just like I will never turn down free food, I also won't turn down food podcasts, and I'm willing to stick with them a bit longer.

THE FOOD PROGRAMME

Like every one of my BBC picks, this one comes to you courtesy of a recommendation by my boyfriend Scott. In typical Brit fashion, the very straightforward tagline on this one is "Investigating every aspect of the food we eat." Yep, that about sums it up. But I swear it's not dull! In fact, Scott and I have spent a good deal of time discussing an episode on probiotics -- and the scientist who experimented with them by shooting someone else's poop up his butt with a turkey baster because he knew the other person's microbiome was better than his.

Oh, you were eating? Sorry!
