The Beach: An Impromptu Trip

What happens when you get a text at 1 a.m. from a friend asking if you're in for a beach day tomorrow? You text back gibberish, of course, because it's a Saturday night, it's summer, and you're at a party. Turns out, it didn't matter what you wrote back because when a friend in New York City happens upon a car on a weekend in summer, you go to the beach. And that's exactly what I did. Following a 10 a.m. wake-up call from said friend, I rolled myself out of bed (OK, I'll be honest, I laid there for like 30 minutes), and threw on a bathing suit.

One breakfast sandwich and iced coffee later, and we were on our way to Ft. Tilden. For those who aren't familiar with the decommissioned military installation turned National Recreation Area, it's a hipster haven. Mainly because there's no oversight: no lifeguards, no rules (which means, people can drink on the beach) and it's easily accessible by bike path. Also, there's tons of old batteries that you can climb and sometimes the site holds art installations. Basically, it's where all of Brooklyn goes in the summer. That is, if you have access to a car or feel like biking 30 miles, because you can't reach it via train (unless you want to brave the public bus system as well). Anyway, Fort Tilden is the perfect crowdless place to relax and picnic with a bottle of rosé. And that's exactly what we did. Like any good Rockaway beachgoer, we followed up our day in the sun with a trip to Rippers.

I didn't take too many pictures because I was relaxing (read: recovering from my Saturday escapades), dammit! But I did manage to capture a few moments of my spontaneous Sunday adventure. Check it out!
