Happy New Year, buddies! I'd like to tell you I'm back and better than ever, but really I'm just back and the same old hot mess I always am. Especially on a day like today, when the weather is horse shit and I am frantically trying to manage work stress and control a rising sense of panic that occurs whenever I remember that I have no business calling myself an adult even though I will turn 30 (!) this very year.
ANYWAY. What are you supposed to do to calm yourself down when you feel like this? Take deep breaths? Meditate? Run screaming for the hills? I'd probably do the latter but it's cold as hell outside, and let's be real, I've yet to buy real snow boots, because HI, UNSUCCESSFUL ADULT RIGHT HERE. I probably won't take deep breaths and meditate either because I suck at it (this brain has no off switch, baby), but one of the things you're supposed to do when you meditate is visualize a place where you'd like to be. THAT I can do. There are kind of a lot of places I'd rather be right now than snowy Charm City.
In fact, I have a wishlist of places I wouldn't mind hitting up in 2015. Truth be told, I won't get to all these places, but even if I get to just one, I'll call it a win and consider 2015 a success.
To be honest, I don't know much about Dubrovnik, or even Croatia for that matter, but in the last year or so, I've seen a lot of travel bloggers on Instagram posting some pretty fabulous photos of the beaches at Dubrovnik, which is on the Adriatic Sea. The city seems like the type of city Jen and I love to explore -- beautiful art and architecture and history all around. And then beach detour? I mean...
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
I'm pretty skeptical about visiting places in the South, but time and again, friends have told me what a great city New Orleans is and how unique it is from the rest of the South -- and the rest of the country for that matter. Knowing I love live jazz since I drag her to a jazz club everywhere we go, Jen told me I'd love how NOLA constantly has live music EVERYWHERE, day and night. Plus the food sounds bangin', so basically NOLA sounds like my kind of city.
I've been to southern California -- Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Malibu, San Diego -- and I loved it. But I've never been to northern California. I'd love to check out San Francisco and Napa Valley. Ideally, I'd like to do a road trip throughout Cali and revisit SoCal too. Yes, I said it. *I* would like to do a road trip. With frequent stops, good food, and showers, of course.
Ever since I read Bill Bryson's In a Sunburned Country, I've been obsessed with going to Australia. This is probably foolish since it's teeming with wildlife that is dead set on killing you, and that would TOTALLY be my luck, but it looks fucking amazing. I mean, look at Sydney! I've just come to think of it as this magical, mythical, faraway land full of charming accents, beautiful beaches, and rad cities. Obsessed. Of course, unless I win the lottery, this one's probably not happening in 2015.
Um well, it's probably a safe bet that Jen doesn't want to go here with me. And I guess it's probably a smart idea to wait a while to see how the politics, like, shake out or whatever before actually GOING to Cuba. But I've always pictured Havana as this cool tropical city frozen in time in the 50s. And if it's good enough for Bey and Jay, shouldn't it be good enough for me?
Other destinations of interest: Hawaii, Berlin, Brazil, Tangiers, and Peru.
