I'm not gonna lie, beach time usually = nap time (I insisted on having a Nook color that is essentially unreadable in sunlight), but since the first Game of Thrones book stole six months of my life last year (in fact, I wrote a pretty sweet book review), I have some catching up to do on my reading list! Here's what I'm reading this summer.
I totally get where Jen is coming from. These characters are not likeable. But I'm reading this now, and I CANNOT put the book down. I am literally losing sleep, reading "just one more" chapter. It's dark, twisty, masterfully written, and I can't wait to see how it ends.
The One & Only
So Gone Girl is about a woman who goes missing, which isn't exactly light, beach-read material. Luckily, Emily Giffin has a new one out. I've read her other ones -- Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Where the Heart Is, etc. -- and they are really well-done chick lit. I think she really captures what it's like to live through major milestones in your late 20s, early 30s, and I am sure her new one is no exception.
Right...Cheryl Strayed had an "eat, pray, love" moment and decided to hike across the country 1,100 miles and write a memoir about it. I'm no hiker; roughing it for me is staying at a Holiday Inn. But as a young, female traveler, I am looking forward to reading about her adventure.
Truth be told, I know nothing about The Goldfinch other than Jen is also reading it, and everyone has raved about it everywhere. So far be it for me to not jump on the bandwagon. Also art.
Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise
Sabrina recommended this one to me ages ago, and I never got around to it, but have kept it on my reading list. Ruth Reichl writes about her adventures in restaurant reviewing, and having dabbled in restaurant reviewing myself, I am stoked to start this one. (Sidebar: If you're interested in reading a review I wrote that was too "mean" to be published, I posted it on my Tumblr here. Noms ahoy!)
So what are you reading this summer? And are you enjoying our beachy kick yet? Come back next week to check out our beach tunes and more!
