When I was a kid, I always just assumed I'd grow up to be famous for something. What that something was was always undetermined. I don't know why I thought this. I guess my parents were good at developing my self-worth though because I thought I was pretty special. Still, for what would I become famous? Acting? No. Singing? Definitely not. Sports? LOL. Art? Maybe. Writing? Oh fuck no.
In fact, I remember discussing with my friend Cammy in elementary school what we would be when we grew up. She told me she wanted to be a writer, and I remember wrinkling my nose and saying that sounded boring.
Twenty years later, here I am. A friggin' writer.
Famous though? Most definitely not. I started my writing career as a sports journalist for a piece-of-shit weekly sports paper and wrapped it up with this snarky indoor soccer blog, my first brush with "fame." (I was kind of a local celebrity among the Baltimore Blast fan club crowd, OK? I mean, they hated me because I made fun of them on more than one occasion, but they KNEW who I was, which is the whole point.)
I had my second brush with fame before Jen and I traveled to the U.K. when I bullied Hudson News into stocking up on gummi bears at JFK (you're all welcome, I do what I can for my people).
Basically, the point is I've now figured out how to become famous -- THE INTERNET! I am steadily becoming an internet celebrity, guys!
Right, so that's a bit of an exaggeration, but writing a travel blog with Jen has been a damn good time, and a lot of you seem to like us (thanks!). In fact, we're in the running for a freaking Mobbie.
What's a Mobbie, you ask?
WELL. The Mobbies have been going on for six years. Run by the Baltimore Sun, they are an awards competition for blogs and social media. An attempt of a journalistic dinosaur staying relevant, I suppose. What? Did I say that out loud?
Love-hate relationship with the Sun aside, I AM SO FUCKING COMPETITIVE, YOU GUYS. I want this. I want a Mobbie so freaking bad. My previously mentioned soccer blog, Just for Kicks & Giggles, was nominated a few years back, but as you can see, the sports category is rife with Ravens and Orioles nominees and sadly a satirical Baltimore Blast soccer blog was just a little bit too niche. But now Jen and I are competing in the Best New Blog category, and with your help, I just know we have a chance!
To vote, please click on this box to the right, or click here, scroll down to the "Best New Blog" category, and select Hashtag Jetlag. Scroll to the bottom, and click enter. You can vote every day from today through November 13. And if we win, I'll dress up in 90s gear, swallow my social anxiety, and go to the party at the Creative Alliance. I will photo document this for you, dear readers, because you will have made me internet famous, fulfilling my lifelong dream.
Your about-to-be famous friend,
P.S. Jen killed it in NOLA this weekend, setting a personal record! And I ate a lot of candy.
